Klaus withdrew from politics briefly in 2002 following a scandal involving the illegal financing of his Civic Democratic Party. Accused of accepting illegal donations from wealthy businessmen, Klaus was forced to step down as party leader. He made a political comeback in 2003 and was re-elected as Prime Minister the following year.
