Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga served as President of Latvia for 8 years from 1999 to 2007. She was the first woman to hold the position and was also the first Latvian to be elected president in a free and democratic election. During her time in office, she oversaw the country's transition to a market economy and its integration into the European Union and NATO.
