Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga served two terms as President of Latvia, from 1999 to 2007. She was the first woman to be elected to the position, and is credited with helping to bring stability and democracy to the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Vīķe-Freiberga was also a strong advocate for human rights and women's rights, and her presidency was marked by a number of significant reforms in these areas.
