Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga was the first woman to serve as President of Latvia. She was elected in 1999 and served two terms, until 2007. During her time in office, she oversaw the country's transition to a market economy and its integration into the European Union and NATO. She is considered one of the most influential women in Latvian history.
