Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist group fighting for an independent Tamil state in Sri Lanka, died in a battle against the Sri Lankan army in May 2009. The exact circumstances surrounding his death are disputed, but it is widely believed that he was killed in a firefight with the army near Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka.
