Carranza was assassinated in 1920, during his presidency, by a group of military officers led by Rodolfo Herrera in the aftermath of the Battle of Agua Prieta, in which Carranza's forces were defeated. The assassination took place in Tlaxcalantongo, Puebla, while Carranza was fleeing the capital to Veracruz, accompanied by his cabinet and loyal troops.
