Pope Victor II ascended to the papacy at approximately 37 years of age. Born around 1018 as Gebhard, Count of Dollnstein-Hirschberg, in the Duchy of Swabia, he displayed exceptional political acumen and loyalty to the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III, who appointed him as Bishop of Eichstätt in 1042.
