Victoria Woodhull published a pamphlet that claimed Henry Ward Beecher, a famous minister and social reformer, had an affair with Elizabeth Tilton, a member of his congregation. This pamphlet was published in 1872 and caused a great scandal. Beecher was eventually acquitted of adultery, but the scandal damaged his reputation and he died a few years later.
