Pterygium is a medical condition in which a growth of tissue, called a pterygium, grows over the white part of the eye (sclera). Pterygium can cause vision problems if it grows over the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye. Richards suffered from a pterygium in 1984 that required surgery to remove.
