Goonewardene evaded arrest during the Second World War. He was a prominent member of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), which was banned by the British colonial government in 1940. Goonewardene went underground and continued his political activities, organizing strikes and protests against the British rule. He was eventually arrested in 1942 but managed to escape from prison and remained at large until the end of the war.
