Czechoslovakia was Šmicer's first international team. He made his debut for the Czechoslovakian national team in 1993, and went on to represent his country at the 1996 and 2000 European Championships, as well as the 2002 FIFA World Cup. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Šmicer continued to play for the Czech Republic, making a total of 80 appearances and scoring 27 goals for his country.
