Nearly half of Volubilis was excavated during and after the French rule. The French took control of Volubilis in 1912 and immediately began to excavate the site. By the end of their rule in 1956, nearly half of the site had been excavated. The French were able to excavate so much of the site because they had the resources and the manpower to do so.
