Wallace Fard Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam, was active in Detroit for four years before he disappeared in 1934. He first arrived in the city in 1930 and quickly gained a following among African Americans. He preached a message of black nationalism and self-reliance, and he urged his followers to reject Christianity and embrace Islam. In 1934, Muhammad disappeared without a trace.
