Born on March 12, 1923, Wally Schirra was an American astronaut and naval aviator. He was one of the original seven astronauts selected by NASA in 1959 and was the only one to fly in all three of the United States' first space programs: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. Schirra also served as commander of the Apollo 7 mission, which was the first crewed flight of the Apollo spacecraft.
