Walter Samuel began his football career in 1996 with the Argentine club Newell's Old Boys. He made his professional debut in the Primera División on 25 March 1996, in a 2–1 win against Rosario Central. Samuel went on to make 57 appearances for Newell's Old Boys, scoring three goals. In 1998, he was transferred to Italian club Roma.
