Walter Schellenberg died in Verona, Italy, on 31 May 1952, after he was extradited from Switzerland to Italy on charges of war crimes. Schellenberg had been sentenced to death by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison. He was released from prison in 1951 and returned to Switzerland.
