From 1923 onwards, Walter Ulbricht was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). He was a key figure in the KPD's leadership and helped to shape its policies. In 1928, he became the party's general secretary and served in that role until 1933. He was also a member of the Reichstag, the German parliament, from 1928 to 1933.
