  • 1950

  • 1949

  • 1951

  • 1952

Answer

In 1950, Walter Ulbricht effectively became the leader of East Germany. He had been the head of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany since 1946, but it was not until after the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953 that he was able to consolidate his power. Under Ulbricht's leadership, East Germany became a Soviet satellite state, and he oversaw the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
