Wangari Maathai was born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya. She was a Kenyan environmental and political activist, and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental organization that has planted more than 50 million trees in Kenya. She also served as a member of parliament and was the Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources in Kenya.
