Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan environmental and political activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her work in protecting the environment and promoting women's rights. She founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, which has planted more than 30 million trees in Kenya. Maathai was also the first woman from Africa to win the Nobel Prize.
