Burger succeeded Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the United States in 1969. Burger was a conservative and Warren was a liberal, so their judicial philosophies were quite different. Burger was a strong believer in the separation of powers and the idea that the Supreme Court should not interfere with the decisions of the other branches of government.
