Wendell Willkie was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician. He was the Republican Party's nominee for President in 1940, losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Willkie was born in Elwood, Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University with a law degree in 1916. He practiced law in Indianapolis for several years before moving to New York City in 1929.
