Admiral Wilhelm Franz Canaris was a German military officer who served as head of the Abwehr, the German military intelligence service, from 1935 to 1944. He was a member of the German resistance to Nazism and was executed in 1945 for his involvement in the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
