Historian Wilhelm Dilthey was a German philosopher and historian who lived from 1833 to 1911. He is best known for his work on the history of ideas and the development of the concept of the Geisteswissenschaften, or human sciences. Dilthey believed that the human sciences should be based on an understanding of the historical context in which ideas and beliefs develop.
