Wilhelm Pieck was a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) for his entire adult life. He joined the party in 1918 and remained a member until his death in 1960. Pieck was a founding member of the KPD and served as its leader from 1933 to 1945. After World War II, Pieck served as the first President of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1949 to 1960.
