Wilhelm Pieck was a German Communist politician who was the first President of East Germany from 1949 to 1960. He was a member of the German Communist Party from 1918 and was imprisoned for his political activities during the Weimar Republic. After the Second World War, he became the leader of the Soviet-backed Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and was instrumental in the establishment of East Germany.
