Born in Abertillery, Wales, Hewlett was born into a family involved in carpentry. His grandfather, also named William Hewlett, co-founded a successful local contracting firm. Hewlett studied engineering at Stanford University and met fellow student David Packard in one of his classes. The two future business partners established Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 1939, and the company quickly became a leader in electronics and computing.
