Serampore College, which became Serampore University in 1827, was the first degree-awarding university in India. The college was founded by William Carey, William Ward and Joshua Marshman in 1818. The college was initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta, but in 1827 it became an independent university. Serampore University was the first university in India to award degrees to Indian students.
