Galway was the original location of Queen's College, before it was moved to Belfast in 1849. The college was founded in 1845 by Queen Victoria as a means of providing higher education to the people of Ireland. It was initially located in Galway, but was moved to Belfast in 1849 due to sectarian violence in the city. The college became Queen's University Belfast in 1908.
