William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India. His father was a lawyer in the British East India Company. Thackeray spent his early years in India, but he was sent to England to be educated when he was seven years old. He attended Charterhouse School and Cambridge University. After graduating from university, Thackeray worked as a journalist and writer.
