After leaving the Prime Ministership, McMahon served as a backbencher for the Liberal Party in the House of Representatives until he retired from parliament in 1982. As a backbencher, McMahon continued to play an active role in parliament, but he was no longer in the position of making major decisions. He remained a member of the Liberal Party until his death in 1988.
