What was unique about McMahon's tenure as prime minister?

  • Served for longer without winning a general election

  • Youngest to take office

  • First to be born outside of Australia

  • Only prime minister to have served in the military

Answer

McMahon served for longer as prime minister without winning a general election than any other prime minister. He was appointed by the Governor-General after the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis, and remained in office until the 1977 Australian federal election, which he lost. He was the last prime minister to serve under the Australian Constitution of 1901, and was succeeded by Malcolm Fraser.
