William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, died on 11 May 1778, aged 69, after suffering from a stroke at the age of 65. He had been Prime Minister of Great Britain twice during the 18th century, from 1756 to 1761 and again from 1766 to 1768. Pitt was a leading figure in the British government during the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War.
