Argon, a colorless and odorless noble gas, was discovered in 1894 by Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay. Rayleigh had been studying the density of nitrogen and found that nitrogen from the atmosphere was slightly denser than nitrogen produced from chemical reactions. Ramsay suggested that this difference might be due to the presence of a new element, and together they isolated and identified argon.
