In 1971, President Richard Nixon nominated William Rehnquist to the Supreme Court of the United States. Rehnquist had previously served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Arizona and as an assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice. He was confirmed by the Senate and took his seat on the Supreme Court in January 1972.
