Lieutenant William Broughton was an English explorer and naval officer. He is best known for his voyage to the Pacific Ocean in 1795–1796, which was the first British expedition to circumnavigate Australia. Broughton's voyage was primarily motivated by exploration, but he also made a number of significant scientific observations, including the discovery of the Great Barrier Reef.
