William W. Belknap was born on September 22, 1829 in Warren County, Ohio. He was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War, and served as Secretary of War in the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant from 1876 to 1877. Belknap resigned from office after being accused of corruption. He died in Washington, D.C. on January 1, 1890.
