William Westmoreland was born in 1914. He was a United States Army general who served as the commander of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) from 1964 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. Westmoreland played a significant role in the escalation of the war and the deployment of American combat troops. He retired from the army in 1972 and died in 2005.
