Willis Lamb won the Nobel Prize in 1955 for his work on the hydrogen atom. He and his colleague, Polykarp Kusch, showed that the energy levels of the hydrogen atom are not exactly as predicted by Theory of quantum mechanics. This difference, called the Lamb shift, is caused by the interaction of the electron with the electromagnetic field.
