Pilecki was interned in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Pilecki was a Polish soldier and intelligence officer who volunteered to be captured by the Germans and imprisoned in Auschwitz in order to gather intelligence about the camp and its operations. Pilecki was able to escape from Auschwitz in 1943 and he returned to Poland where he organized and led an underground resistance movement against the Germans.
