Władysław Szpilman was a Polish pianist and composer. He was born in Sosnowiec, Poland, on 5 December 1911. Szpilman studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory and made his debut as a soloist in 1931. He performed regularly on Polish radio and in concert halls throughout Europe. In 1939, Szpilman was forced to flee Warsaw when the Nazis invaded Poland.
