Martial law in Poland was declared by Wojciech Jaruzelski, the country's communist leader, on 13 December 1981. The move was in response to a wave of strikes and protests that had been sweeping the country since August of that year. The strikes were sparked by rising food prices and economic stagnation, and were led by the Solidarity trade union.
