Pauli's full middle name was Ernst, after his maternal uncle, theoretical physicist Ernst Ludwig. He was the youngest of three children born to Wolfgang Joseph Pauli and Bertha Camilla Schütz. Pauli demonstrated a precocious talent for physics, publishing his first paper at the age of 21 and earning a doctorate from the University of Munich in 1921.
