Antiochus III the Great ruled over the Seleucid Empire from 223–187 BC. His reign began at the age of 16 and saw the empire at its greatest territorial extent. Antiochus expanded the empire to include most of Anatolia, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. He was also responsible for founding the city of Antioch on the Orontes River in Syria.
