Xuanzang was born in 602 in China, and began studying Buddhist texts with his father in his childhood. He became a monk at the age of 13, and traveled to India in 629 to seek out Buddhist teachings. He spent 17 years in India, studying under various teachers and visiting many Buddhist sites. He returned to China in 645, bringing with him a large number of Buddhist texts and artifacts.
