Yahya Khan assumed presidency of Pakistan in 1969, following the resignation of Ayub Khan. He was elected by the National Assembly, and his presidency was marked by political instability and economic crisis. Khan was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1971, and was replaced by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
