Yakubu Gowon served as the Head of State of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, almost nine years. He was appointed to the position after a military coup overthrew the civilian government of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Gowon was initially seen as a moderate who would return Nigeria to civilian rule, but he eventually became more authoritarian. He was overthrown in a coup in 1975.
