Gowon escaped to Britain after being overthrown in a coup d'état in 1975. He had been the military ruler of Nigeria since 1966, and had led the country through a period of relative stability and economic growth. However, his government was increasingly unpopular, and he was overthrown by a group of military officers led by Murtala Muhammed. Gowon went into exile in Britain, where he remained until 1985.
