Pugachev's Rebellion (1773–75) was a major popular uprising in the Russian Empire led by Yemelyan Pugachev, a Cossack who claimed to be Peter III, the deposed husband of Catherine the Great. The rebellion began in the Urals and spread throughout the Volga region and the south-east of the empire. The rebels captured several cities and won several battles, but were eventually defeated by the Russian army.
