Yevtushenko did live outside Russia for a time. In 1963, he spent a year in the United States as a visiting professor at Indiana University. During his time in the US, he gave lectures and readings, and met with other writers and intellectuals. He also traveled to other countries in Europe and Asia. Yevtushenko's time in the US was a significant experience for him, and it influenced his later work.
